New comedy-drama explores the story behind iconic Miss Marple films

Studio Productions @ BLT will present Murder, Margaret and Me, a comedy-drama by Philip Meeks, at Bingley Arts Centre from 27 to 29 March 2026. The production marks 50 years since the death of Agatha Christie, the celebrated author known as the Queen of Crime.

About the play

The play focuses on the early 1960s, when two British cultural icons, Agatha Christie and Margaret Rutherford, were involved in the making of the Miss Marple film series. It explores the behind-the-scenes story of how these films almost did not come to fruition, due to Christie’s initial reluctance to have Rutherford portray her famous character.

Margaret Rutherford, an acclaimed actress often described as “the funniest woman alive,” was reportedly hesitant to take on the role, concerned it might damage her reputation. The drama imagines an unlikely friendship between Christie and Rutherford, filled with moments of high tea, brandy snaps, and gossip. Meanwhile, Christie takes on a detective role herself within the narrative, seeking to uncover a secret about Rutherford.
