Explore Japanese Woodblock Prints and Cultural Treasures

A new exhibition titled Ukiyo-e will open at Cliffe Castle Museum in Bradford, showcasing a collection of Japanese woodblock prints and cultural artefacts. The exhibition runs from 1 November 2023 until 1 March 2026 and is free to attend.

About the Exhibition

Ukiyo-e features a variety of colourful and detailed woodblock prints that illustrate a range of themes from Japanese culture. Visitors will find depictions of mythical creatures, city life, and landscapes, offering insight into the “floating world” — a term used to describe the transient pleasures and everyday life of Edo-period Japan.

The exhibition also includes delicate Japanese objects from the museum’s own collection. These items reflect the interests of local industrialists who once collected such treasures in the Bradford District, linking the region’s history with the art on display.
