Bradford Tops Social Mobility Index for Fifth Year
March 24, 2026University of Bradford leads in social mobility amid national improvements
The University of Bradford has been ranked first on the Higher Education Policy Institute’s (HEPI) Social Mobility Index for the fifth consecutive year. This ranking highlights the university’s ongoing commitment to widening access to higher education and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Understanding the Social Mobility Index
The Social Mobility Index (SMI), published annually by HEPI and compiled by London South Bank University, measures the social mobility of graduates from English higher education institutions. It considers the number of socio-economically disadvantaged graduates and the social distance they travel through university, combining data on access, continuation, and outcomes for undergraduates across most modes of study.
In the latest index, the University of Bradford secured the top position, followed by Aston University and the University of Wolverhampton.
Additional University Performance Indicators
- Ranked 16th in the UK for graduate employment
- Ranked 8th nationally for ‘value added’ by The Guardian
- 91% of graduates in work or further study 15 months after graduation
- 82% of employed graduates enter high-skilled roles
- 77% of research rated world-leading or internationally excellent
University Statements
Professor Nick Braisby, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford, described the achievement as a significant recognition of the university’s mission to support students from all backgrounds. He emphasised that the consistent top ranking demonstrates a sustained approach to creating an environment that prioritises student success and access.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Professor Udy Archibong, highlighted that equity, access, and participation are integral to the university’s work. She noted that the strong social mobility performance complements the university’s research strengths in areas such as cancer research, nanotechnology, business studies, psychology, computer science, and artificial intelligence.
Nick Hillman OBE, Director of HEPI, stated that the Social Mobility Index is important because it identifies institutions that help students progress meaningfully, rather than those that start with the most advantaged cohorts. He noted that the index shows how universities equip students with skills and confidence valued by employers and society.
Student Experiences
The university has supported students facing significant challenges, including:
- Gloria Ludlow: A Sanctuary Scholar who graduated with first-class honours in Adult Nursing despite experiencing hardship including modern slavery and personal loss. She now works as a staff nurse for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Lisa Varley: A single mother who returned to education after redundancy during the pandemic. She graduated in Accounting and Finance in 2024 and now works as a self-employed licensed bookkeeper.
Ongoing Developments
The University of Bradford continues to build on its success with a range of unique programmes, including the UK’s only paramedics degree offering a paid placement with Yorkshire Ambulance Service. The university’s School of Management holds triple accreditation, and most courses are professionally accredited. Graduates benefit from up to five years of careers support after completing their studies.
