Local alumnus recognised for contributions to artificial intelligence

Dr Bashir Mohammed, a graduate of the University of Bradford, has been awarded the Science and Sustainability category at the 2026 Study UK Alumni Awards. The ceremony took place in Los Angeles on 22 May, where Dr Mohammed was honoured for his work in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly his role as Senior Lead Gen-AI Solutions Architect at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AI research with real-world applications

Dr Mohammed’s research focuses on the integration of AI technologies to enhance Intel’s Edge product, utilising generative AI and large language models. His work aims to address environmental challenges through engineering innovation, reflecting a commitment to applying technology for public benefit.

He acknowledged the influence of his doctoral supervisors at Bradford, Professor Hassan Ugail and Professor Irfan Awan from the School of Computer Science, AI and Engineering, highlighting their mentorship as instrumental in shaping his academic and professional development.

Recognition of academic and professional journey

Professor Hassan Ugail expressed pride in Dr Mohammed’s achievements, noting his intellectual rigour and creativity during his doctoral studies and subsequent research fellowship at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the United States. Dr Mohammed’s career path demonstrates the global reach and impact of research conducted at the University of Bradford.

Additional Bradford alumni shortlisted

Two other University of Bradford graduates were shortlisted as national finalists in the 2026 Study UK Alumni Awards, both in the Social Action category:

  • Matthew Amalitinga Abagna (Ghana) – Recognised for advancing digital access and providing financial literacy training to underserved communities, particularly supporting women in rural areas.
  • Joshua Alade (Nigeria) – Acknowledged for his work in educational access and youth development, focusing on leadership initiatives and policy engagement to support sustainable development goals in Nigeria.
