From Aleppo to Bradford: A Journey of Resilience and Achievement

Ahmad Hamdan, a Syrian refugee who arrived in the UK less than a decade ago, has graduated from the University of Bradford with a first-class honours degree in Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science. His sister Jamilah also graduated with a first-class degree in the same subject, marking a significant milestone for the family who fled conflict in Syria.

Early Life and Migration

Ahmad left Aleppo, Syria, at the age of 10 during the civil war, initially moving with his family to Turkiye before settling in Leeds in 2017. Upon arrival in the UK, Ahmad and his sister faced language barriers, as neither spoke English. Despite these challenges, both siblings pursued higher education together, supporting one another throughout their studies.

Before moving to the UK, Ahmad worked in a jeans factory in Turkiye, undertaking long shifts in difficult conditions. This experience, he says, helped shape his character and determination.

Academic Achievements and Family Support

Ahmad, 21, and Jamilah, 23, graduated together from the University of Bradford with first-class honours degrees in BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science. Their younger brother Abdo, 19, is also studying the same course and has completed his first year. The family plans to return to Syria in August to celebrate their academic success with relatives for the first time since leaving the country.

Ahmad expressed pride in his achievements and gratitude for his family’s support, describing his sister as a vital source of comfort and motivation throughout their studies.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

After arriving in Leeds, Ahmad became involved with the Leeds United Foundation’s community football programme for young refugees. He progressed from participant to coach, earning a UEFA C Diploma coaching qualification. Ahmad and his family have since become British citizens, with his younger brother Bilal being born in the UK.

Currently, Ahmad is completing a placement at Orean Personal Care, a private-label cosmetic formulator and manufacturer. He hopes to secure a permanent role as a technician and aims to develop his career further as a chemist.
