New programme combines English language learning with career skills

Bradford College has introduced a new Hybrid ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programme that enables students to develop their English language skills alongside vocational training. The course, which began in September, targets Entry 3 ESOL students and offers them the opportunity to study a vocational subject in Construction, Science, or IT while continuing their English studies.

Course structure and vocational options

The programme currently has 24 students enrolled. All participants study ESOL together before splitting into their chosen vocational areas. The vocational components include:

  • Construction: Students gain experience in various trades such as carpentry and joinery, plumbing, and brickwork.
  • Science: The curriculum covers basic topics in biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • IT: Students develop digital skills, including the use of Microsoft and Google software tools.

Integration of language and practical skills

The course aims to provide students with practical experience while helping them understand potential career pathways early on. Alongside developing technical skills, students also learn subject-specific vocabulary to support their language acquisition. For example, students in the Construction group have reported learning new terminology such as “tape measure,” “hammer,” “copper pipe,” and “copper cutter.”

IT students have noted improvements in their digital literacy, with one student mentioning learning how to save files using OneDrive as part of their studies.

Real-world application of English

Course leader Rachid Meftah highlighted the benefit of combining theoretical English learning with practical application. Students use English not only in classroom settings but also in hands-on activities and communication with tutors, which helps reinforce their language skills in meaningful contexts.

Progression and future opportunities

While the current programme is designed for Entry 3 ESOL students, there is no Level 1 Hybrid ESOL course available at present. However, students can continue their English studies alongside vocational courses in separate classes to further develop both language proficiency and career-related skills.

Feedback from students during the first year of the programme has been positive, with many appreciating the chance to explore different career options while improving their English.
