Yorkshire Obesity Research Alliance!

July 5, 2021 Off By admin

YORA is the Yorkshire Obesity Research Allowance. This blog sets out what YORA does, why they think working collaboratively with people and communities on research is a good thing and how you can get involved.

Tackling obesity is a national priority and Yorkshire and the Humber has some of the highest prevalence of adult overweight and obesity in England. YORA aims to facilitate effective regional action on obesity through collaboration and co-production.

There are currently over 150 YORA members from universities, the NGS, local government, businesses and the voluntary sector across the region, all with an interest in tackling obesity. They want to increase the involvement of the voluntary and community sector and people from (or representing) BAME communities in the network to tap into their local and experiential knowledge around obesity. This short animation highlights some of the benefits of involving people in research.

Involving people is the central theme of the next YORA event. Patient and public involvement (or PPI for short) is a term generally used in health-related fields to cover ways of involving the voices of non-professionals in research and practice. YORA has written an information piece about what PPI is and some examples of current work.

Joining YORA is totally free! If you want to be involved in a research project then your costs will be included in funding applications. More information about YORA, including who is involved and specifics about their activities is available on the website.

The YORA PPI event is on Wednesday 14th July from 11:00 to 13:00. You can find out more and register on Eventbrite. Please also follow them on Twitter @YorkshireORA.
