Planning Application Submitted For Squire Lane Health And Wellbeing Centre
July 3, 2025Bradford Council has submitted a planning application for the proposed Squire Lane health and wellbeing centre.
The application marks the next stage in the development process ahead of a final investment decision scheduled for later this year.
Facility Design
The proposed centre, funded through Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) Levelling-Up grant funding, includes:
Swimming Facilities
- 6-lane, 25-metre pool
- One depth-adjustable learner pool
Fitness and Exercise Areas
- One fitness gym
- Two studio spaces for classes
- Separate spinning class area
Development Timeline
The planning application follows public consultation held in March, during which facility plans were presented to residents and stakeholders for feedback.
Concurrent with the planning application process, work continues on design optimisation and final costing development. Should planning permission be granted, the council will undertake detailed procurement processes and further financial evaluation of the scheme’s viability before presenting a final determination to the council’s executive.
Official Statement
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said:
“We’ve always wanted to provide a sport and leisure facility for this part of the district and the recent public consultation gave the community the opportunity to find out more about the plans and provide feedback on the proposals. It’s good to see the project staying on the critical path for delivery and moving on to the next phase of development. Obviously, there’s still some way to go before we get to a final decision. We’re pleased to have retained the £20 million grant funding for this pool. Going through this next stage of development will start to more accurately assess the ongoing running costs of a new facility, which we need to have before any final decision can be made on construction.”
Next Steps
The development process includes several remaining stages:
- Planning application determination
- Design optimisation completion
- Final costing assessment
- Detailed procurement processes
- Financial viability evaluation
- Executive decision on project progression
Funding
The project is supported by £20 million in Levelling-Up grant funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
