White Rose 12 Bell Competition Held at Bradford Cathedral

Youth and experienced teams compete in annual bell ringing contest

On Saturday 11 October, Bradford Cathedral hosted the White Rose 12 Bell Competition, an event that brings together bell ringing teams from across Yorkshire. The competition was organised by the Yorkshire Tykes, a youth bell ringing group consisting of ringers under 18 from around the region.

Participating teams

The event featured eight teams from churches and cathedrals known for their 12-bell ringing. The teams came from the following locations:

  • Leeds Minster
  • York Minster
  • York St Martin’s
  • Ripon Cathedral
  • Stockton on Tees
  • Beverley St Mary
  • Huddersfield
  • Yorkshire Tykes (youth team)

Competition details

The ringing took place between 11am and 3pm, with each team aiming to deliver the most accurate and precise performance possible. Judges observed the performances discreetly from an office within the cathedral. Results were announced around 3.30pm, with the winning team awarded a trophy.

About the Yorkshire Tykes

The Yorkshire Tykes is a youth group that provides opportunities for young bell ringers under the age of 18 to develop their skills. The group first entered the White Rose 12 Bell Competition in 2023 at Ripon Cathedral. In the most recent contest held on 5 October 2024, they achieved second place out of seven teams, demonstrating significant progress and competing successfully against more experienced bands.

Public attendance

Members of the public were invited to attend and listen to the competition, providing an opportunity to experience the traditional art of change ringing in a historic setting.
