Local mother honours late son through fundraising event

A charity ball is being organised in Bradford to raise funds for children receiving hospital care, in memory of a young boy who passed away after battling a rare illness. Claire Walker, from Wibsey, has dedicated over ten years to fundraising efforts following the loss of her son, Axl, who died shortly before his third birthday.

Axl’s Story and Ongoing Campaign

Axl was treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary for a rare blood disorder, which involved frequent hospital visits for blood transfusions and two bone marrow transplants. Despite the severity of his condition, Claire recalls Axl as a joyful child who loved to play, highlighting the importance of play during hospital stays.

In response to her experiences, Claire launched the “Sparkle for Axl” campaign. This initiative has raised more than £22,000 to date, supporting children in Bradford hospitals by providing toys, activities, and contributing towards the creation of a sensory room for seriously ill inpatients.

Last year, Claire completed 13 half marathons in memory of Axl, further contributing to the campaign’s fundraising efforts.

Supporting Play and Wellbeing in Hospital

The funds raised support Bradford Hospitals Charity’s Gift of Play appeal, which aims to ensure that children undergoing treatment can engage in age-appropriate play and therapeutic activities. These activities are intended to improve wellbeing during hospital stays, which can often be isolating and frightening for young patients.

Laura Riach, Director of Bradford Hospitals Charity, emphasised the significance of play in a clinical environment, stating that it helps children maintain a sense of normality and enjoyment despite their health challenges. She acknowledged Claire Walker as a key advocate for the cause.
