Bradford College Launches New Teacher Training Programmes

New courses aim to address demand for qualified teachers

Bradford College has introduced a new suite of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programmes through its Margaret McMillan School of Education. The development marks a significant step in the institution’s history of providing teacher education, with the aim of meeting the growing need for qualified educators across various educational settings.

Qualified Teacher Status available from 2026

From September 2026, Bradford College will be authorised to independently award Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as part of its degree offerings. This follows the successful completion of an accreditation process overseen by the Department for Education. The new programmes will cover training for primary, secondary, further, and higher education teaching roles.

Supporting diverse students and career pathways

Kerry Lewis, Head of School for ITT and Education at Bradford College, highlighted the importance of the new provision in expanding opportunities for aspiring teachers. The programmes are designed to support a diverse range of students, including those facing challenging circumstances, and aim to fill critical vacancies in local schools and partner institutions.

Government funding changes may benefit trainees

The introduction of the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) by the UK Government offers eligible learners funding support equivalent to up to four years of post-18 study. This funding can be applied flexibly to full-time or part-time courses at levels 4 to 6, including degrees and higher technical qualifications. Prospective teachers undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and other ITT qualifications may be able to access this support.

The Margaret McMillan School of Education, named after the education reformer Margaret McMillan, has been providing teacher training since 1952. The school emphasises social justice and improving educational opportunities in Bradford and beyond.
