Remembering a Bradford-born artistic figure

Bradford College has acknowledged the passing of David Hockney, a prominent British artist known internationally for his contributions to art in the 20th and 21st centuries. Hockney was a former student of Bradford School of Art and maintained strong ties to the city throughout his life.

Early life and education

David Hockney was born in Bradford and began his artistic education at Bradford School of Art. It was during this period that he sold his first painting, a portrait of his father, for ÂŁ10 at the Yorkshire Artists Exhibition in 1957. This marked the beginning of a distinguished career in the arts.

Career and artistic legacy

Hockney became a leading figure in the Pop Art movement and gained international recognition for his work. His artistic output included painting, drawing, photography, and digital media. His works often reflected themes such as performance, theatre, observation, and human relationships.

Throughout his career, Hockney maintained a connection to Yorkshire, frequently drawing inspiration from its landscapes and cultural identity. This regional influence was evident in many of his later works.

Connection to Bradford College

Bradford College has commemorated Hockney’s legacy in several ways:

  • In 2014, the college named its ÂŁ50 million flagship building the David Hockney Building. This six-storey facility is a central part of the college campus.
  • In 2023, the college featured Hockney’s early work and legacy in a Sky Arts documentary presented by Melvyn Bragg.
  • The college holds a print of The Hypnotist, created in 1963. This piece was produced during an experimental phase of Hockney’s career and exists as both a painting and a print (etching and aquatint) in a limited edition.

Statements from Bradford College

Liz Leek, Deputy CEO of Bradford College, commented on Hockney’s impact:

“David Hockney was not only one of the world’s greatest artists, but also one of Bradford’s most inspiring sons. His journey from Bradford School of Art to international acclaim embodies the transformative power of education and creativity. He remains a source of immense pride for our College, our city, and the wider cultural community.”

Bradford College expressed condolences to Hockney’s family, friends, and all those influenced by his work, recognising his ongoing influence on students and the arts community.
