Engaging Well-being and Outdoor Projects for Young People

A Bradford-based charity, Emerge, has shared details of its recent summer term activities aimed at supporting the mental and physical well-being of young people in the BD4 area. The organisation’s initiatives have included well-being sessions for boys, gardening projects, and self-defence classes for girls, reflecting a range of positive activities during the term.

Boys’ Well-being Sessions

During Men’s Mental Health Week, Emerge received funding which enabled them to hold two Boys’ Well-being days. These sessions focused on both mental and physical health through activities designed to be engaging and enjoyable. The programme included teamwork challenges and mindfulness exercises, with the aim of encouraging boys to discuss their feelings and pressures openly and to promote self-care for mind and body.

Gardening Projects

Gardening has been a key part of Emerge’s summer activities, with several groups involved in planting and tending to various plants. The BD4 social action group has been maintaining an orchard in Holme Wood, which is reported to be thriving. Meanwhile, the Holmewood 4 O’Clock club has been planting strawberries, tomatoes, and broad beans, and has started creating a sensory garden.

Additionally, the Social Action Group and Girls’ Group in East Bowling have been constructing and varnishing wooden planters, which they are using to grow strawberry plants. These gardening activities are intended to provide young people with opportunities to learn new skills, engage in positive outdoor activity, and experience the satisfaction of nurturing plants.

Self-Defence Skills for Girls

The Holme Wood girls’ group participated in two sessions focused on self-defence skills. These sessions combined physical exercise with practical training, offering the participants an opportunity to develop important personal safety skills while maintaining fitness.

These activities reflect Emerge’s ongoing commitment to supporting young people’s well-being and development through varied and practical programmes.
