Local Woman Honoured for Work Supporting Vulnerable People

Yvonne Stocks DL, co-founder of the Palm Cove Society (PCS), has been recognised by the University of Bradford for her work supporting vulnerable groups in the local area. She was presented with an Outstanding Contribution Award on 14 July 2026 for her efforts to address health inequalities and provide safe housing for people affected by domestic violence, modern slavery, and other forms of disadvantage.
Background and work with Palm Cove Society
Yvonne Stocks, 65, was born and raised in Bradford and has spent much of her career working to improve the lives of disadvantaged individuals. After earning a first-class honours degree in Midwifery Studies, she co-founded PCS with her husband Gerard in 2007. The organisation initially focused on vulnerable women but expanded its services the following year to include men facing similar challenges.
PCS supports various groups, including survivors of domestic violence, refugees, asylum seekers, and victims of human trafficking. The organisation also collaborates with the University of Bradford, providing opportunities for survivors to share their experiences and develop skills related to higher education and entrepreneurship.
Recognition and roles
- In 2015, Yvonne was appointed as a specialist practitioner in trauma-informed accommodation services and served as a Special Advisor to the First Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, working across the UK to raise awareness of modern slavery.
- She received a High Sheriffs Award in 2017 for her involvement in a high-profile prosecution.
- In 2018, she was commended by the Metropolitan Assistant Commissioner for her commitment to victim care and support.
- In 2023, Yvonne was commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, assisting the Lord Lieutenant, the King’s representative in the county.
