Together in Bradford Exhibition – The People Powered Press
August 24, 2022Thu 01 Sept – Mon 31 Oct | 9am – 5pm Mon – Fri & 9 am – 3pm Sat | Free
A retrospective exhibition of letterpress street art from the People Powered Press, displayed across the Bradford district this year.
All written by Bradford community members and groups, a series of giant murals popped up across this region at the start of 2022. The works were all entirely letterpress printed by hand by community members on the People Powered Press, the largest letterpress printing press of its kind in the world from its home in Salts Works, Shipley.
This exhibition tells the story of the works, the press, and the participants who took part in this special series of works, amplifying the voices of participants at a scale never seen before in letterpress printing. The exhibition will feature photography, original letterpress prints and poetry from the participants from the project — alongside a new work Together, created for the exhibition.
Created working with local poets and writers and the People Powered Press teams, the participants’ works reflected a wide range of issues — from individual identity and the forces affecting their lives, to celebrations of their homes in Bradford, Keighley and the surrounding area, to their feelings about our future together.
Groups featured in the exhibition include — BIASAN (Bradford Immigration & Asylum Support & Advice Network), Bradford Libraries, Chapel FM (Leeds), Displace Yourself Theatre, Oasis Academy Lister Park, Inclusion North, Keighley Association Women & Children’s Centre (KAWACC), Keighley Youth Service, Project 6 (Keighley), Sharing Voices Bradford, Saltaire Primary School Eco Club,
Supported by Bradford MDC & Arts Council England, JKN OilTools (Batley), The Metal Store (Cleckheaton).
