Annual event highlights mental health awareness and support

World Mental Health Day is observed every year on 10 October, with events taking place globally to raise awareness about mental health issues and encourage open conversations. The day is organised by the World Federation for Mental Health and aims to highlight the experiences of individuals living with mental health challenges.

This year’s theme

The theme for World Mental Health Day 2026 is Lived experiences heard: Real voices, real change. This focuses on listening to people’s personal experiences of mental health and recognising the importance of their perspectives in shaping understanding and support.

Activities in Bradford and Craven

Bradford District and Craven Mind (BDC Mind), a local mental health charity, is marking the day by emphasising practical approaches to maintaining mental health and wellbeing. In the lead-up to 10 October, the organisation is launching a new Self-Care Guide designed to provide advice and support for managing mental health.

The guide includes contributions from BDC Mind staff and volunteers, sharing their own experiences and tips on looking after wellbeing. Printed copies of the guide will be available at community locations across Bradford and Craven throughout October to increase accessibility.

Self-Care Guide details

The Self-Care Guide offers a variety of suggestions and resources aimed at promoting mental wellbeing. Key elements include:

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Practical methods to manage stress
  • Mindfulness exercises
  • Breathing and grounding techniques
  • Information about local support services

The guide emphasises that self-care does not require significant time or financial investment, highlighting simple activities such as walking, listening to music, or taking short pauses during the day as beneficial.

Accessing the guide

The Self-Care Guide is available to download online and printed copies are being distributed throughout the Bradford and Craven areas during October. Organisations, community groups, or local venues interested in obtaining copies can contact BDC Mind via email at communications@bdcmind.org.uk.

Additional resources

Alongside the guide, BDC Mind is sharing videos featuring staff and volunteers discussing their personal mental health experiences and offering advice. These aim to provide authentic insights and encourage open dialogue within the community.
