Innovative technology projects showcased by software engineering and network security students

On 13 May 2026, Bradford College held its annual Final Year Project Open Day, where students from the BSc (Hons) Software Engineering and BSc (Hons) Network Infrastructure and Security programmes presented their year-long independent projects. The event brought together further education students, academic staff, external examiners, university partners, and industry professionals to review and discuss the work completed.

Range of student projects

The projects covered a variety of technological areas, demonstrating technical skills alongside research, problem-solving, and professional development. Some of the key themes included:

  • AI-powered learning platforms
  • Mobile applications addressing mental health, AI chatbots, and flood detection
  • Social media analysis and fake news detection tools
  • Internet of Things (IoT) based home automation systems
  • Cloud computing and real-time monitoring solutions
  • Advanced system design, such as a graphical user interface for NixOS

Several projects demonstrated potential for real-world application, including solutions that could be implemented within the College environment.

Highlighted projects and student reflections

One notable project was developed by Software Engineering student Danial Hussain, who created an AI-powered learning system aimed specifically at further education students. The platform converts traditional teaching materials into interactive tools like games, quizzes, and flashcards to enhance accessibility and engagement. Danial plans to continue refining the platform to improve its speed and layout.

Another student, Craig Walding, reflected on his personal development throughout the course, noting increased confidence and communication skills. He is interested in pursuing a career in software testing to improve system efficiency.

Nojus Toleikis showcased a project focused on simplifying the configuration of NixOS, a complex Linux-based system, by developing a graphical user interface to make it more user-friendly.

Network Infrastructure and Security students prepare for careers

Students from the Network Infrastructure and Security programme presented projects aligned with industry needs and discussed their career plans. For example:

  • Azaan Akram expressed intentions to pursue professional certifications to deepen his expertise.
  • Mohammad Talha Saeed plans to combine entry-level work with certifications such as CompTIA and cloud security, followed by a Master’s degree.
  • Mohammad Ismail aims to specialise in cyber security and potentially develop a professional online presence.
  • Rehan Asif focused on disaster recovery systems and intends to become a cyber security analyst, supported by further certifications.

Industry engagement and event significance

The Open Day included participation from industry representatives from organisations such as FAS Solutions, Nettrades.AI, Purple Sq, the Ministry of Justice, Synox, and SEP2. Their involvement provided students with valuable feedback and insight into professional expectations.

The event serves as an important milestone, helping students develop employability skills including communication, presentation, and professional confidence as they prepare to enter the technology sector.
